MANILA, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Eighteen people, mostly children, have been killed in a cholera outbreak which started in the southern Philippine province of Sultan Kudarat last week, local news network ABS-CBN News reported late Tuesday.
The first victims of the cholera outbreak were reported by the villagers last week when several people started complaining of diarrhea, the report said. Residents said they did not know the kind of disease that their neighbors got in the initial days.
Most of the victims were children who were not able to bear the illness, it said.
Based on limited media reports, the scale of the outbreak is still unclear and it is not known whether the situation is already under control.
Philippine National Red Cross has sent team to the villages where the cholera outbreak was reported. They have obtained water samples for tests. Local officials are asking government and non-government organizations to help attend to people who have developed suspected syndromes.
