Medical products are part of China's major import and export commodities of medicine and healthcare. In the first half of 2006, the total import and export value of China's medical products was USD 4,991 million, an increase of 21.10 per cent over the same period last year, accounting for 34.14 % of the total value of the medicine and healthcare commodities. Of this, the export value of medical products reached USD3,168 million, 31.37 % higher than the corresponding period last year, representing 33.87 % of the total export value of medicine and healthcare commodities.
During the first half of 2006, China medical products were mainly exported to Asia, North America, Europe, Latin America and other countries and regions. Specifically, the major countries and regions are USA, Japan, Germany and China Hong Kong. The countries and regions to which China exported with relatively higher volume of medical products included Italy, South Korea, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Singapore, Canada, Spain, Russia, China Taiwan and etc.
In the first half of 2006, China's major provinces and cities exporting medical products were listed in table 3. During this period, the leading companies in terms of total export volume and value were GE Hangwei Medical Systems Co., Ltd. (GEHW), Omron Dalian Co., Ltd., Nuctech Co., Ltd., Family Healthcare Devices (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Rexton (Suzhou) Hearing Systems Co., Ltd., Luxottica (Dongguan) Optical Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Bao'an International Trade Development Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co., Ltd., Shanghai Light Industrial Products Import & Export Co., Ltd., GN ReSound (China), Unitron (Suzhou)Hearing Co., Ltd., Winner (Shenzhen)Medical Group, Xiamen Mengfali Technology Co., Ltd.
China's medical products exporting during the first half of 2006 mainly focused on general trade (USD 1,768 million, 55.83%), followed by processing trade of imported materials (USD 1,128 million, 35.61%) and then processing and assembling trade of customer's materials (USD 184 million, 5.81%).
China medical product export witnessed less volume and value in Q1-2 2006 as compared with the same period last year in medical motor vehicles (88.16% lower than the same period of last year), scintigraphic apparatus (66.66% lower), microscopes (other than optical microscopes) & diffraction apparatus (22.17% lower), direct-reading liquid thermometers (10.52% lower), MRI apparatus (5.95% lower), parts & accessories for microscopes & diffraction apparatus (excl. optical microscopes) (4.80% lower).
China medical products with increased export volume in Q1-2 2006 over the same period last year included: apparatus based on the use of alpha, beta or gamma radiations, for medical, surgical, dental or veterinary uses (366.66% higher than the same period last year), ECG recorders (210.60% higher), dental chairs incorporating dental equipment (192.41% higher), syringes (85.44% higher), endoscopes (78.59% higher), ultraviolet or ultra-red devices (61.37% higher), massagers (54.99% higher), pacemakers (parts and accessories not included) (33.33% higher), X-ray image intensifiers (30.80% higher), B-mode ultrasound diagnostic system (22.75% higher), color ultrasound diagnostic system (19.07% higher), CT (17.67% higher), EEG recorders (10.47% higher).
Since China's import of medical products has long exceed its export, its import and export trade of medical products has always presented unfavorable balance. In recent years, with the improvement of manufacture technology and product quality, the increase rate of medical products importing has slowed down, whereas the increase rate of medical products exporting has speeded up. In the first half of 2006, China's import and export trade of medical products saw a surplus of 1,346 million US dollars for the first time. The situation that export of medical products exceeds import has been completely changed. In terms of the R&D and manufacture of medical products in China, due to the advancement of technology and the increasing types of medical products, the nationalization rate of some large-scale and advanced medical products has gradually risen with rapidly increasing rate of domestic usage and of export. In the next few years, it is expected to maintain a good momentum of growth in export of medical products.
